Khan-Khokhi

Favourite place is Khan-Khokhi Khyargas Mountain National Park in Uvs Province, western Mongolia. A real park and mountain range, not Mongolia as a vague whole. Around 49.42° N, 94.79° E. More than three thousand square kilometres. The mountains sit between the Uvs Depression to the north and the Khyargas Lake side to the south. That ridge between two basins is what I mean.

Ulaanbaatar is loud and crowded like most capitals. Bulgan with my herder uncle is animals, weather, and work tied to seasons. Khan Khokhi is different again. Higher, longer views, less noise. It is one of Mongolia’s ten sacred mountains. Tops can look flatter than you expect. Slopes can be steep. Old ice shaped parts of the land. You do not need a packed plan. Walk, look around, stop talking for a bit.

It also reminds me the country is not one photo. North faces get more rain and can hold forest and meadow. South can feel drier. There are burial mounds in the wider area. Ulaanbaatar is traffic and study stress. When people only know desert shots, this place keeps my own map straighter. Not a beach brand. Not a skyline cliché. Just a western mountain park that stuck with me when I was younger and still does from Sydney.

In Australia I use those ridges as a contrast. Cities have their own quiet, but it is not the same. When study piles up I do not invent a random holiday. I remember wind on open slopes and the next rise being further than the map suggests. That is useful. It is also why this is its own page instead of one bullet on home.
